This course offers an excellent opportunity to bring in the light and banish the darkness of winter by learning new brushwork techniques, allowing your work to become looser with a freshness and vibrancy associated with Paul’s painting.
Watercolour is an excellent medium with which to explore the properties of whites in watercolour, from “negative” painting to masking techniques, which will be demonstrated and explored. Light, also explains the mysteries regarding how form is revealed by differing light conditions. These can vary from daylight, electric, lamp to candle light. We find out how shadows can add drama and interest to landscape and still life. How the sun and moonlight affect waterscapes is explained with demonstrations (colour mixing will be explained thereby showing how to create space and invigorate your compositions).
“The most joyous thing about watercolour painting is its transparency and translucency – watercolour paint works by allowing light to pass through the particles of pigment, the colour reflecting from the white of the paper. The paper in fact should become your white paint, which is where your negative painting comes in and the magic begins”
Various methods of expression will be explored and demonstrated in detail including abstract and collage. The end results should be stimulating, provocative and exciting to work on, freeing your painting and playing with an array of techniques. Paul will demonstrate throughout the weekend as well as ensuring plenty of time for your own experimentation and for critical feedback if desired.
