Robert Manners

Implied Resistance Printmaking images

Robert works across disciplines including painting and printmaking. His interest in painting and his approach to it extends to the way he approaches printmaking. Meticulous in detail and taking layers as a starting point he constructs beautiful work combining the constant experimentation of materials with the use of strong colour, often with surprising combinations.

Following a move to Devon from Bristol in 2012 I began making a series of collages. Still derived from my interest in maritime and navigational paraphernalia the work suddenly took on a much looser feel with overlapping curves and panels exploring the space and solidity of the pictorial surface with glimpses of what lies beneath. From these collages I started making a number of print editions using emboss, screen and relief prints techniques. Many of these prints look as if they may very well be made from pieces of torn and coloured paper, assembled and layered together.

Manners draws on a range of influences as diverse as engineering drawings and maritime ‘hardware’ as well as artists such as Sean Scully, William Scott, Nicholas de Stael, Ben Nicholson and Louise Nevelson. He Studied at Chelsea School of Art & Design in the 1980’s and received his MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from the University of West of England.

He is currently a part time lecturer at Plymouth College of Art (Painting, Drawing & Printmaking BA) and a print teacher in number of different studios including Spike Print Studio in Bristol as well as running his own screen printing courses in Ashburton, Devon. In 2014 He was a Co-founder of N|E|W ~ Ashburton Art Festival and was the Co-Founder Director / Curator of CONTAINER, an Artists’ led space in Bristol established in 2008. In the last couple of years Robert has exhibited work with The ArtRoom (Topsham 2014), at Multiplied in 20013/14 (Christies, London), The Royal Society of Printmakers (Bankside,London) and at NEW Ashburton Art Festival, Affordable Art Fairs and with CONTAINER in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.
