KAIROS TIME

The walls are imbued with the provocation to have a different kind of conversation.

We collaborate and look for synergies with others to ensure that we, as well as the people we work with, aren’t burnt out, bored, disillusioned or skint, but rather nourished, inspired, committed, passionate and working within resource limits. That’s why we created Kairos Time - time and space at the opportune moment for generously spirited, pioneering artists, producers or arts organisations.

Kairos Time is simply supported time and space, specifically during the beginnings and endings of projects - those times when you want to read and research, think and walk, quietly or reflectively with others - those times when you don’t quite know what you’re doing yet, or you need to process what just happened, creatively and instinctively, not for the funders, not for the audiences, not for us, just for yourself or your organisation.

We focus on people who are making new work concerned with climate change, human rights and migration and with organisations concerned with making positive systemic change. Artists in previous years have included JonziD, Charlotte Spencer, Tom Marshman, Kay Michael/Empty Deck, Josephine Birch, Fevered Sleep , Massive Owl and Verity Standen. Organisations have included Fuel Theatre, Dance in Devon, The Wrong Crowd and Doorstep Arts.

How does it work/What’s on offer?

Karios Time is part of our bespoke programme, which means there’s no set format or financial model. That said there are key resources which include a small house, self catered or fully catered food, studios that include a printworkhop (littlejohn etching press) pottery (wheels, kilns and more) a large flexible open studio space and miles of glorious countryside. Length of residencies tends to be shorter - a few days or a week or so, rather than longer term.

If you have funds to support your time at Coombe then your money will go towards an artist or organisation that doesn’t. If you don’t have funds to support your time at Coombe we will find a way for your costs at Coombe to be met.

If you are an artist making work concerned with migration, climate change or human rights or an organisation looking at how to make effective changes to the arts ecology, and you’re interested in having some time at Coombe, contact us here and we can talk through the possibilities.

HERE /NOT HERE

Here/Not Here combines elements of dance, especially Krump and hip hop, with football, BSL and Visual Vernacular (VV), a poetic and choreographic form of sign dance.  It looks at how movement is language.  The film was written by Jonzi D, directed by Bim Ajadi and created in collaboration with the cast.  An Artemisia Films production for BSLBT JonziD spent a week at Coombe working on HERE/NOT HERE as part of our Karios Time residency programme.
