Exploring the subtleties of Mokuhanga Printmaking (Japanese Water-based Woodblock Printing) with Lucy May Schofield.
This four day course follows on from our 3 day introduction to Mokuhanga in 2024 and is designed for anyone that has experience of the Mokuhanga technique and wants to develop their skills and understanding of the medium.
The techniques used are complex, the medium offers benefits in slowing down and paying attention to the nuance of touch and sensitivity required to gauge depth, dampness and pressure. Lucy has spent many years working on the technique in Japan, the UK and abroad and has taught the techniques extensively. Over the course of the four days, you will have time to transfer a simple image onto Japanese plywood, carve various colour separation blocks in relief and print on Japanese mulberry paper (kozo washi) with water-colour and rice glue. With time for both the carving and printing phases you will be able to explore various print effects, from ‘goma zuri’ (sesame printing) to ‘bokashi’ (gradation printing) and 'mokume zuri' (woodgrain printing) while registering your multi- block image through the simple but brilliant traditional ‘kento’ registration system.
Lucy is a visual artist working in collaboration with expansive landscapes and dark skies, charting the seasonal shifts through performative interplays with paper and expanded print. Living and working in a remote place has offered Lucy opportunities to observe the ways in which time behaves and to pay honest attention to the natural world around her. A resulting desire to limit the material impact on the planet makes the environmentally friendly water-based Mokuhanga techniques ideal.
A graduate of London College of Printing Lucy awarded a one-year residency with Visual Arts in Rural Communities in rural Northumberland, where she is still currently based. She has attended residencies in Italy, Iceland and the US, spending significant time working and studying in Japan. Recently elected as an Associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Lucy’s works are held in public and private collections including Tate Britain, The Ashmolean Museum and Yale Centre for British Art. Her prints have been presented at The Kentler International Drawing Space New York, 3331 Arts Chiyoda Tokyo and The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition London.. In 2021 I was awarded a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust grant to develop her practice and was the winner of the Flourish Award for excellence in printmaking in 2020.
Lucy is also part of the Mokuhanga Sisters collective, an international collaborative group formed of nine artists across four continents, exploring contemporary mokuhanga techniques and exhibiting together globally. A selection of my prints can be viewed at Bankside Gallery, London and Kentler International Drawing Space Gallery,New York.
This course is a unique chance to dive deeper into the Mokuhanga technique with someone who has dedicated time to the skill and is passionate about sharing her knowledge.
