Pottery - 5 day throwing course with Sabine Nemet.

  • Coombe Farm Studios (map)

A practice-based stoneware pottery throwing course aimed at intermediate potters who would like expand and develop their throwing skill - an opportunity to learn new skills and brush up on essential techniques working with master potter Sabine Nemet.

The forms that you will make are all based on the range of pots that Sabine produces and has a long experience of making. Sabine completed an apprenticeship as a thrower in East Germany in 1998 with Hans Joachim Grünert in Waldenburg (Sachsen) where she underwent a three year thorough training in producing domestic ware exclusively on the potter’s wheel after which she was introduced to wood firing. In 2000 Sabine travelled to England to gain more experience in ceramics and met Nic Collins and moved to Moretonhamstead in Devon.

Sabine’s pots are mainly thrown, sometimes altered, cut and put together again. Sabine makes small series of mugs, jugs, lidded jars, bowls and much more. As decoration, she use stamps, made from carved porcelain. The shapes on the stamps are based on nature, seeds leaf pattern, flowers, which are then pressed into the clay repeatedly. When the clay is completely dry, the imprint is filled with different coloured glazes and then sometimes glazed over again.

Please do note that this course is a throwing course, rather than a throwing and wood firing course. You will be working with the Coombe in house throwing clay by Earthstone (ES/5). At the end of the course you will have the choice of taking your work home as greenware for you to glaze and fire at home or to leave at Coombe and make a selection of glazes based on our in-house glazes. We will then bisque fire, glaze and fire you pots for you and they will then ether be available to collect or we shall arrange a courier. The charge for glazing and firing work is £5 per kilo to include clay, glazes and firings.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: This course is designed for anyone with some throwing experience on the wheel who wants to further develop their skills and experiment with altered forms.
