At the age of 15 Paul Riley’s artistic career began when the Royal Academy accepted one of his works for their Summer Exhibition. At that time he was the youngest painter to have work exhibited at the Academy. Since graduating from Kingston Art School in 1965 Paul has had many solo and group exhibitions both in the UK and Europe, and further afield in Kuwait and Australia. Primarily an oil painter and printmaker, Paul also became fascinated by the medium of watercolour. In the last 20 years Paul has established himself as one of Britain’s leading watercolourists.
Coombe Farm Studios was founded in 1983 by Paul with his wife Tina, Paul continues to be our lead tutor and lives on site. He teaches watercolour and oil painting both at Coombe and abroad. He has written three bestselling instructional books on watercolour, his third “The Magic of Watercolour Flower Painting” is due out in June 2015 with an accompanying instructional DVD. He contributes regularly to The Artist Magazine and he lectures and exhibits worldwide.
Pure watercolour relies on transparency. The special quality that is embedded in a beautiful watercolour relies on light passing through the particles of paint to produce the painting luminosity. No other medium does this – hence my continued fascination, and why I will never stop experimenting with it… I will be asking you to look in a special way, to look in depth and to look and create with a sense of adventure.
